"Storage Unit"

"Storage Unit" was a solo installation at the Morgen Gallery in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. It explored the phenomena of storing sensory experiences in five metal boxes that replicated the functions of five human senses. The units converted what they sensed into electricity and stored their experiences as electrical charges in simple devices called "capacitors". Like the earliest phonographs which could only record-but not play-back sound, it is the artist's hope that at some point in the future the accumulated energy can be extracted from the capacitors and the experiences recalled. In this way, "Storage Unit" explores the conflict between unique human experiences and the desire to retain them in some form. It also asks if self-perception can be an aspect of man-made devices.
